The Code of Discipline — Chapter 02: Grit Over Feelings
- Date Created: 2026-10-19
- Status: In Progress
- Reading Span: PDF pages 32–45
1. Pre-Reading Briefing
- Core Question: If feelings are unreliable, how do you keep acting on your commitments when you don't feel like it? And what are you supposed to do with the feelings themselves?
- Key Points to Watch For:
- Four specific emotions the author says sabotage discipline (pp. 33–34). Which one hits you most often when you reach for YouTube?
- “Action breeds motivation, not the other way around” (p. 38). This flips the usual order. Is the support for it evidence or just appeal to your own experience?
- “Emotional detachment” (p. 38). Notice exactly how the author defines it. Is it the same as ignoring or suppressing feelings?
- Perfectionism, and what the author says it really is (p. 39).
- The 3-Second Rule (pp. 41–45). Note both the technique and the brain-based explanation of why it works. Judge that explanation the way you judged Ch. 1's “rewiring” claim. Also ask whether it conflicts with, or complements, the Ch. 1 action of waiting out the urge to open YouTube.
- Context & Thread from Prior Chapters: The Introduction said motivation is unreliable. Ch. 1 blamed convenience for training us to avoid discomfort. Ch. 2 turns from the outside world to the inside: the feelings that make us hesitate. Keep in mind the Ch. 1 gap, where every kind of discomfort was treated as good, and see whether this chapter treats every feeling as the enemy.
